What College Coaches Actually Evaluate
The recruiting myth goes like this: if you're talented enough with the ball, a coach will find you. That was partially true 15 years ago. It's not how Division I, II, or competitive NAIA programs operate today.
Modern college soccer recruiting evaluates three layers:
Layer 1: Technical and tactical ability. Can the player execute at tempo? Do they read the game? This is what highlight reels and showcase matches show. Most competitive club players clear this bar.
Layer 2: Physical profile. Can the player sustain their technical quality for 90 minutes at college intensity? Do they have the sprint speed, repeated sprint ability, strength, and aerobic capacity to compete at this tempo - not just survive it? This is where the field narrows dramatically.
Layer 3: Coachability and projection. Does this player have the physical foundation to develop further in our program, or will we spend two years just getting them to baseline fitness?
Layer 2 and Layer 3 are where the preparation gap lives. And they're increasingly measured with data, not just eye tests.
The Numbers Coaches Use
College programs are no longer relying solely on watching a player touch a ball for 25 minutes at a showcase. Physical benchmarking is now part of the evaluation process at a majority of competitive programs.
A 2023 survey of NCAA Division I men's soccer programs found that 71% use some form of physical assessment during the recruiting evaluation. Here's what they're measuring:
Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test (Level 1). This is the gold standard for match-related aerobic fitness in soccer. It measures your ability to repeatedly perform high-intensity efforts with short recovery periods - which is exactly what a soccer match demands. Benchmarks for incoming D1 freshmen: 1,600-2,000+ meters. The average competitive U17 club player who hasn't trained specifically for this test? 1,000-1,400 meters.

Sprint times. 10-meter acceleration is a more relevant metric than 40-yard dash times for soccer. D1 benchmarks sit around 1.70-1.75 seconds for the 10-meter sprint. Over 40 meters, competitive programs expect sub-5.2 seconds for men and sub-5.6 for women. These aren't world-class numbers. They're baseline expectations.
Vertical jump. A proxy for lower-body power output. D1 men average 55-60 cm. Women average 45-50 cm. Club players who don't train power specifically average 42-48 cm (men) and 35-42 cm (women).
GPS match data. This is the newer evaluation layer. Programs that use GPS during showcases or request it from club coaches are looking at total distance covered, high-speed running distance (above 19.8 km/h), sprint distance (above 25.2 km/h), and - critically - the ratio of second-half output to first-half output. A player who covers 5.5 km in the first half and 4.2 km in the second half has a 24% performance drop. That tells a coach everything about physical readiness.
College players cover 10-12 km per match. The average competitive U17 covers 7-9 km. That gap is not closed by more ball work. It's closed by building the aerobic engine, the strength base, and the recovery systems that support higher output.
How the Preparation Gap Shows Up at Showcases
Showcase tournaments are compressed recruiting environments. Coaches often watch 3-5 matches in a day. They're making quick evaluations, and they've learned what to look for.
The preparation gap doesn't announce itself. It reveals itself gradually - usually starting around the 55th minute.
Minutes 1-30: Both the prepared and underprepared player look similar. Technique is clean. Positioning is sharp. Effort is high. At this stage, talent masks physical gaps.
Minutes 30-50: The underprepared player starts making micro-compensations. Their first touch gets slightly heavier. They take an extra beat before passing. Their defensive recovery runs start a half-step late. These are subtle - parents in the stands might not notice. Coaches do.
Minutes 50-70: Performance fade becomes visible. The underprepared player's sprint speed drops measurably. They start avoiding high-intensity actions - choosing the safe pass instead of the penetrating run, pulling out of 50/50 challenges, drifting into positions that require less movement. They're managing their fatigue instead of competing.
Minutes 70-90: The prepared player is still making runs. Still pressing. Still arriving first to second balls. The underprepared player is surviving. And in a 25-minute window where a coach might be watching, that contrast is stark.
Here's the part that matters for recruiting: coaches often make their physical assessment during the second half of the second or third match of a showcase weekend. They've already seen technical quality. Now they're looking for the player who still has it at the end of a demanding day. The preparation gap is most visible exactly when the evaluation stakes are highest.
What "Coachable Body" Actually Means
College coaches use a phrase internally that rarely makes it into recruiting conversations with families: "coachable body." It means a player who arrives with the physical foundation to be developed further - not a player the coaching staff has to rebuild from baseline.
A coachable body means:

The recruiting calendar creates urgency that most families don't recognize until it's too late.
Peak recruiting activity for D1 programs happens during the fall of a player's junior year and the spring/summer before senior year. That means the physical preparation needs to be in place by age 16-17.
Building a meaningful strength base, aerobic capacity, and movement quality takes 12-18 months of consistent work. That pushes the start date back to age 15-16 - the beginning of high school, when most players are fully absorbed in club soccer and nobody is talking about S&C.
Here's the timeline that works:
Age 14-15: Introduce foundational movement patterns. Bodyweight training, single-leg stability, basic hip hinge and squat mechanics. Build the aerobic base through dedicated conditioning 2x per week. This is not heavy lifting - it's building the vocabulary of movement that more advanced training requires.
Age 15-16: Begin structured resistance training. Progressive overload with compound lifts. 2-3 S&C sessions per week alongside club training. Start position-specific conditioning. Introduce nutrition awareness - not a diet, but understanding how food fuels performance.

Closing the Preparation Gap
The preparation gap is not a talent gap. It's a structural gap created by the way American youth soccer is organized. Clubs develop skill. Nobody develops the physical systems that sustain skill under fatigue. And college coaches evaluate both.
Closing the gap requires:
